Home / Our News / Important Research on Vitamin D and the Coronavirus

It has been a few weeks since I’ve sent out an update on COVID-19 and wanted to give you some new information on the pandemic. Strong evidence is emerging that Vitamin D supplementation may be useful in improving outcomes in patients with COVID-19, including studies from Indonesia and the Philippines that found an extremely high correlation with vitamin D deficient individuals being the most likely to die from COVID-19. In the Indonesian study, researchers looked at 780 cases with laboratory-confirmed infection with COVID-19. They classified vitamin D status as normal >30 ng/ml, insufficient 21-29 ng/ml and deficient <20 ng/ml. 98.9% of vitamin D deficient cases died, 87.8% of vitamin D insufficient cases died, while only 4.1% of cases with normal vitamin D levels died. In a study of 212 COVID-19 patients in the Philippines, researchers classified patients as mild, ordinary, severe and critical. Their analysis found that  85.5% of patients with sufficient (>30ng/ml) Vitamin D had mild cases while 72.8% of patients who were deficient in Vitamin D (<20ng/ml) had severe or critical cases.

This information, along with the many other studies around the world, on the importance of vitamin D to help with the coronavirus does not mean that you will be immune or guaranteed protection from this infection. It does, however, give some hope that something as simple and inexpensive as vitamin D may be very important in providing your immune system the ability to fight the infection. The best way to know if your vitamin D status is normal is to get a blood test for your vitamin D level. I would like to offer my patients the opportunity to get their vitamin D level tested, along with a 15 minute phone consult to discuss whether you need change your vitamin D supplementation for $50. If you would like a more in depth lab panel for risk factors for this and other viral infections, I am offering a panel consisting of a Complete Blood Count (CBC), Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP), Vitamin D, C-Reactive Protein (CRP), Hemoglobin A1C, along with a 15 minute phone consult to discuss the results for the price of $100. Please be aware that these tests are for informational purposes only and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease condition.

Please call my Boardman office at 330-729-1350 to order either panel or order online:
